Florence Language Prerequisite
One semester of Italian is required before students study abroad for the Semester Program in Florence Italy. This course must be taken through the Italian Department as a regular semester course at WashU. The course can be taken pass/fail or for a grade. If for a grade, students must earn a C or better to meet the prerequisite.
Exceptions
If a student cannot fit Italian 1 into their regular semester, they may take 1 of 2 tracks.
- The student can take a 3 credit Italian Level 1 course at another university over the summer. They must earn a minimum grade of a C. The student must get the course pre-approved by the Program Manager and then present the transcript to the Program Manager to fulfill the prerequisite. The credits are not guaranteed to transfer to Washington University. To see transfer credits, the student should refer to the Art or Architecture ‘Procedure and Policies’ : http://registrar.wustl.edu/student-records/registration/proceduresandinformation/
- The CAPS Italian course can be taken in the summer to fulfill the Florence program pre-requisite language requirement. Students must earn a minimum grade of a C. While this course fulfills the language requirement, the credits do not apply to a student’s degree completion in any category. Students are required to pay the summer tuition directly to CAPS and likely will not qualify for financial aid over the summer. CAPS Italian courses are not an option during the fall or spring semesters. Students must present the transcript to the Program Manager to fulfill the prerequisite.
