Sam Fox School Faculty Committees Policy

Sam Fox School Faculty Council

The Sam Fox School Faculty Council is responsible for addressing academic and administrative policies with the responsibility of making recommendations to the Dean of the Sam Fox School, the Director of Architecture, the Director of Art, or to the faculty as appropriate. The Council consults with the Dean of the Sam Fox School on new policies or changes to existing policies and brings forward changes to the faculty on promotion and tenure matters that require discussion and approval. The Council will review University policy changes with the Dean of the Sam Fox School and faculty when appropriate and vet policy proposed by ad hoc committees or other bodies within the School. The Council may take up issues brought forth by any member or members of the faculty, including all full-time, part-time, and visiting faculty members. The Council will meet four times during the academic year and additional meetings will be added as needed at the initiative of the Council or at the request of the Dean of the Sam Fox School.

The Sam Fox School Faculty Council is composed of six tenured faculty members from the Colleges of Art and Architecture (even split between Art and Architecture faculty). Faculty with administrative appointments are not eligible to serve on the committee. Faculty Council members will be nominated and elected by eligible voting members in their respective college faculties to serve up to 3-year terms with an annual staggered rotation. The nomination process should give consideration to faculty across the multiple disciplines within each college. Faculty may not serve consecutive terms. The three members of the Council from Art and the three members from Architecture will each be regarded as subgroups representing their college with the ability to make decisions within the council that are college-specific and call college faculty votes. All matters should first be brought to the attention of the entire Faculty Council; the Council will determine whether a matter can be handled on the college level.

A chair of the Council will be elected by the voting members to serve a two-year term. The election for chair should be conducted as needed during the last meeting of the academic year. In addition to setting the agenda for Council activities, the chair may appoint ad hoc committees for the development of policy when needed in consultation with the Dean of the Sam Fox School, the Director of Architecture, or the Director of Art. As needed, the Council will invite members of the faculty, staff, and administration of the School and Kemper Art Museum to meetings as non-voting participants.
