Scholarships and Awards

Graduate and undergraduate students pursuing their degrees from the College & Graduate School of Art are eligible to apply for the following scholarship opportunities and travel awards.

Jeffrey Frank Wacks Scholarship

The Jeffrey Frank Wacks Scholarship for 2024 is open to undergraduate students earning the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Communication Design, Studio Art, or Fashion Design from Washington University in the 2023-2024 academic year (August 2023, December 2023, May 2024). This prestigious award honors Jeffrey Frank Wacks, class of 1991, and recognizes excellence in visual art and design, scholarship, and citizenship.

In 2024, the Wacks Scholarship is a $15,000 award (see information below about taxable income). Funds will be used by the recipient in the year following graduation to advance their creative practice. Funds may be used for supplies and equipment, travel, studio rent, production of work, exhibition expenses, documentation of work, and other expenses directly related to the recipient’s practice. 

Applications for the Wacks Scholarship must be submitted online through SlideRoom, and are due by Monday, April 15, 2024. The award recipient will be announced at Sam Fox School Celebration Events in May 2024.

John T. Milliken Foreign Travel MFA Award

Graduate students earning the Master of Fine Arts in the College of Art from Washington University in the 2023-2024 academic year (August 2023, December 2023, and May 2024) are eligible to apply for the John T. Milliken Foreign Travel MFA Award, which helps to finance travel abroad for the purpose of enriching their art and/or design practice. The winner will receive a cash award of $8,000 (see information below about taxable income).

Applications for the John T. Milliken Foreign Travel MFA Award must be submitted online through SlideRoom, and are due by Monday, April 15, 2024. The award recipient will be announced at the Sam Fox School Celebration Events in May 2024.

John T. Milliken Foreign Travel Undergraduate Award

Undergraduate students earning the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) or a Bachelor of Art (BA) in Communication Design, Studio Art, or Fashion Design from Washington University in the 2023-2024 academic year (August 2023, December 2023, and May 2024) are eligible to apply for the John T. Milliken Foreign Travel Undergraduate Award, which helps to finance travel abroad for the purpose of enriching their art and/or design practice. The winner will receive a cash award of $8,000 and the option of using the College of Art’s apartment/studio in Paris, France, at the Cite Internationale des Arts (see information below about taxable income).  If the winner wishes to travel somewhere other than Paris, he/she will receive the cash award, and the first runner-up will be given the Paris apartment/studio option without the cash award.

Applications for the John T. Milliken Foreign Travel Undergraduate Award must be submitted online through SlideRoom, and are due by Monday, April 15, 2024. The award recipient will be announced at the Sam Fox School Celebration Events in May 2024.

In accordance with IRS rules, these awards are taxable income to the recipient. If you are a US person for tax purposes, the amount you receive will be reported to you on a Form 1099-MISC. If you are a nonresident alien for tax purposes, the amount may be subject to 30% tax witholding and will be reported to you on a Form 1042-S.
